Saffron is a small and cozy restaurant located in the city center, around the corner from Sheraton Hotel in District 1. They serve Mediterranean cuisine including Greek souvlaki skewers and moussakas. It is owned and managed by the same people as Italian restaurant Ciao Bella.

My favorite cuisine is Greek, and that is the main reason to me having been in Greece six times. Don't get me wrong it is also a beautiful country, but the food is just amazing. This makes me try pretty much every restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City which offers Greek dishes, sadly I am more often than not disappointed. I had heard about Saffron before as I frequent their sister restaurant Ciao Bella which makes some of the best Italian food in Vietnam, so I had my expectations set very high for my visit.

While waiting for our starters we got a bread basket with two dips to share, the bread was really nice tasting and hot out of the oven, a perfect start if it would not have been burnt on one side. The dips were a bit plain but went quite well with the bread. My starter was a carrot soup which was probably the best carrot soup I have ever had, very simple, very delicious. The soup was followed by pork souvlaki skewers with saffron rice which came with a spicy red dip and a cool yogurt dip. The saffron rice and the dips were nice, and there was nothing wrong with the meat quality, but the meat was a bit plain for my taste and could have been jucier. The dessert of the day was a small cheesecake with a strawberry sauce, it was fine but nothing special. Especially compared to Ciao Bella's fantastic desserts it felt a little uninspired.

My three dishes came as a 190,000đ set lunch, which in the end was good value for this nice meal even with some flaws. I will be back to try other dishes and would recommend Saffron for lunch or dinner.
